The Best Cape Charles History Attractions

Virginia is one of the most historically relevant places in all of America. It was where most of the English settlers lived in the days of the 13 Colonies, and has always been an important location throughout United States history.


If you consi
der yourself a bit of a history buff, Cape Charles has several low-traffic history attractions surrounding the town. Some of these museums are focused on American history or citizens, others are focused on the natural history of the Cape and how we can preserve the nearby environment.

The Cape Charles Museum features multiple exhibits about Cape Charles’ railroad culture and hardworking people. You’ll be able to tour several buildings and rail cars used throughout the town’s history, including Bloxom Station and the Pilot House, both of which were used to transport supplies between cities. There’s also a Chesapeake Bay steamship display in the Museum Building.


The African American Business exhibit is arguably the g
randest highlight, as many African American businesses thrived during Cape Charles heyday—some of which you can still visit in town.

The Rosenwald School is a reconstruction-era school for black Americans who wanted to improve their lives. The building is old, but is being restored with the hard work and donations of those interested in preserving its history. You can purchase a brick of your own to add to the school.


It’s just a stop by or drive by attraction right now, but it’s still something that can be interesting to see in person.

One of the earliest settling families in Virginia is the Custis family. They came to The New World from the Netherlands, and became incredibly wealthy through tobacco farming and land speculation with his home country. Many prominent members of the family are buried right here on this former plantation.

If you’re looking for a broader history of Cape Charles and the surrounding islands, the Barrier Islands Center is the place to go. Tour guides will move you through a traditional American farm, where you’ll find numerous artifacts showing off the history of Cape Charles, Machipongo, and all the other surrounding towns. 


Make sure you schedule a reservation early, as this is one of the most popular museums in the region.

Hours: 9AM - 5PM


This land was bought by Littleton Eyre in 1760, and has remained in the family’s possession ever since. Eyre Hall is one of the best preserved historic homes on the Barrier Islands, so come take a look if you want a relaxing outdoor history tour.


Walk the Cape Charles Historic District

Heading to town and want a casual afternoon of history? Take a stroll around the historic district of Cape Charles. The beautiful park might not have a ton of history within its boundaries, but if you walk around the neighborhoods you’ll see gorgeous historic homes strewn all over. It doesn’t cost anything, and it’s a simple stop, but you can get some great pictures here.

The historic district is surrounded by Strawberry Street, Park Row, Plum Street, and Tazewell Avenue.

Savage Neck Dunes

Address: 2186 Savage Neck Rd Drive, Cape Charles, VA


Learn more about the environment on the Barrier Islands. Savage Neck Dunes gives you an up-close look at the native plant and animal species. You can walk the Cave and Karst Trail for some natural geologic history on the island here. It’s a fun DIY adventure!
